Poor Economy Doing It to Manny and the Mets
Tuesday, February 10, 2009 10:22 1 CommentNothing can escape the evil clutches of our recent economic downturn, including major league baseball. Judging at the number of high profile unsigned free agents this winter, and the recent news that Citigroup may rescind their offer for naming rights to the new Mets stadium, the economics of MLB reflect what’s happening in the [...]
Chicken Little Wears Purple
Thursday, January 29, 2009 15:44 5 CommentsIt’s possible that the owners of the Minnesota Vikings, the Wilf family, are eyeing Los Angeles as a new franchise home as well as a partnership with a SoCal developer for a stadium deal. As reported in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, a proposal is in place to develop a tract of land for a [...]
Clippers Clipped
Monday, January 26, 2009 21:55 No CommentsAh, the Los Angeles Clippers. Perpetually LA’s second team, 2008-2009 is proving to be one of the worst seasons ever even for a franchise for which mediocrity is a hallmark.
What particularly hurts for the Clips and their fans this year is that coming into the season, hopes and expectations were unusually high.
The Clippers have been [...]
Hello, 2009 – Bye Bye Best Of 2008
Friday, January 2, 2009 21:46 No CommentsHappy New Year!
We’ve been awfully quiet for the last two weeks, and I apologize. It was not my intention to slag, but I went to visit my family over the holidays only to discover that they had a miserable internet connection that made it impossible for me to do just about anything. Then I became [...]
The Hate List
Sunday, December 21, 2008 13:28 9 CommentsDISCLAIMER Born and raised in a small Pittsburgh suburb where the smell of slag meant people were working hard and proud of it. I wear Pirate gear as proudly as Steeler and Penguin stuff.
Last week, I‘m in a sports bar the Flyers are losing a hockey game, the Steelers rallying against [...]
Improving…
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 20:10 No CommentsA few weeks ago I postulated that Mike Dunleavy might be the third NBA coach fired this season, unless the Clippers brass granted him a brief reprieve to measure the efficacy of the Zach Randolph-Cuttino Mobley deal. At the time Los Angeles was 2-11. Since the trade the Clippers are 4-6–not great, but a significant [...]
Drinking Some MJD
Thursday, December 4, 2008 16:14 No CommentsI was just listening to an interview with former (and very proud) UCLA Bruin Maurice Jones-Drew on the AM 570’s Loose Cannons radio program here in Los Angeles. Jones-Drew was talking some serious smack about USC Trojans in anticipation of the annual UCLA-USC grudge match at the Rose Bowl this coming Saturday. Although I think his comments [...]
I Stand Corrected!
Wednesday, December 3, 2008 15:32 No CommentsA few days ago I predicted that the LA Clippers would be the next NBA franchise to fire their head coach after a woeful start to the season, but the Toronto Raptors (whose 8-9 record is far superior to the 3-14 mark that Mike Dunleavy’s team has achieved) have just given the pink slip to [...]
Momentary Lapse of Lakers
Tuesday, December 2, 2008 21:15 No CommentsFor a brief moment, the Lakers of this season looked like the Lakers of last season. Tonight the Pacers outscored the Lake show 30-13 down the stretch, winning on Troy Murphy’s tip-in at the buzzer.
Everybody has a night off, but it’s how the Lakers lost that cause flashbacks. Poor defense. A huge blown lead. And [...]
Coaches Dropping Like Flies
Monday, November 24, 2008 12:24 No CommentsFirst the Oklahoma City Thunder fired head coach P.J. Carlesimo after a miserable 1-12 start. Now the Washington Wizards have fired Eddie Jordan after a nearly as pathetic 1-10 kickoff to the season. It would appear that NBA franchise front offices are starting the 2008-2009 season with unusally short patience for coaches of underperforming teams.
Jordan’s firing [...]
