Pick and analysis for the NFL Week 13 Thursday Night game.
NFL WEEK THIRTEEN THURSDAY
Green Bay Packers (7-4) @ Detroit Lions (4-7) +3 46.5 [O]
Since Aaron Rodgers ascended as quarterback of the NFL’s most storied team, analysts have all but conceded the NFC North to the Pack. Even in 2010, when Green Bay won the Lombardi over Pittsburgh, the Meat Men persevered through a rash of injuries and fears they wouldn’t even make the playoffs.
Last year, Rodgers told concerned fans to, “Relax” when the Pack played bad early season football, then made a strong playoff run. Somehow, 2015 feels different. Green Bay lost whatever offensive speed they had at wide receiver to injuries and the guys catching passes simply don’t do it with consistency necessary for NFL success. Rodgers’ WRs have dropped 23 passes, resulting in his lowest completion percentage and QB rating since 2007.
Conversely, Matthew Stafford is completing a career high percentage of his passes and his best rating in four years. The Jungle Kings have a shot to sweep the season series with Green Bay since 1991—and they slapped a bigger simian off their back with a Week 10 win at Lambeau.
These NFC North foes are statistically equal, they hover around 20th in every category except scoring, in which Detroit gives up seven more points a game.
Usually, these late season, short week, division games tend to follow one of two scenarios. The better-quarterbacked team blows out a clearly inferior opponent, or the home dog pulls off the upset.
We’re taking the home team in this one because of Jim Bob Cooter…I just love writing, saying, or hearing that name: Jim Bob Cooter. Nobody knows if it’s the “Southern Thing”—Matt Stafford from Georgia, Cooter from Tennessee—or coaching changes made after a 1-6 start. The feeling in Motown is Cooter’s presence and adjustments since he took over are the reasons the Lions have won three consecutive games.
With Ziggy Ansah emerging as a defensive force, the Lions will rid themselves of one more monkey tonight—take the Over…
