NFL 2014 Week 13 Picks & Analysis – FootballSunday, November 30, 2014 9:34
Picks and analysis for Week 13 of the 2014 season.
NFL WEEK 13
TOUGH? NFL QUARTEBACKS WEAR SKIRTS
We pay star quarterbacks, in the “most important position in team sports” 15-25 million dollars a year. The NFL protects that investment on the practice field and on weekends from late August to the first week in February.
NFL quarterbacks aren’t only protected, they are coddled, their egos massaged, their psyches nurtured.
All that, I get.
Business is business in pro sports. It would be flat stupid not to protect such a high-end investment.
If we are honest, our athletes who we determine to be the best of the best are treated with kid gloves from the time they first display exceptional athletic excellence.
Even that, to a degree, I get.
If a child can play soccer or golf at a higher level than their peers, (s)he can pay for their own education and eventually find a home in the lucrative fields of sports or media.
I’m listening to Casey Stern on Sirius satellite and he won’t stop blaming owner, Daniel Snyder, GM, Bruce Allen, for the “disgraceful, horrible” handling of former prodigy, Robert Griffin the Third.
He blames Snyder for bringing RG III, in with impossibly high expectations. He blames Allen for not surrounding the former Baylor phenom with enough talent. Stern rants about Mike Shanahan, for leaving Griffin’s “legs dangling” when he was injured and setting him up for the ACL tear he eventually incurred.
Certainly, there is truth to those charges. Snyder gave up way too much of Washington’s future to move up to draft Griffin. There is little talent around him because of that and the money Griffin will command in the all-important second contract. Shanahan wasn’t tuned in to his young quarterback the way he should have been.
All that, I get…
Stern saves his most intense anger for Jay Gruden’s recent handling recent support of Griffin, then benching Griffin the day after.
People cherry-picking facts to support a narrative?…People rewriting history?…People crying about irresponsible behavior—except from the party who most deserves that criticism?…
THAT, I don’t get.
Nobody left Griffin “dangling.” He lied to Shanahan about the severity of how badly his knee hurt. The medical staff warned Griffin he could further severely injure the knee. Shanahan concurred but was told pain tolerance was an individual thing and if Griffin wanted to play, it didn’t mean he would definitely rip the tendon, but the risk was there.
To his credit, Griffin insisted, in public, he was ready and able to play and wanted to be on the field.
If I were Shanny, I would have kept the kid out, but, you have to wonder if Snyder was involved in that decision. We can rightly blame Snyder for all the decisions he’s made concerning Griffin.
When does Griffin get blamed for the endless endorsements? When does Griffin get blamed for throwing his teammates under the bus?
If after hearing RGIII avoid responsibility as if it were Ebola, Jay Gruden walked into Snyder’s office and said–“He goes or I go. I’m the coach of this team. If I don’t make him pay big for turning his back on the team, I lose 52 players…I can deal with losing one.”—
If Daniel Snyder gave Jay Gruden permission to bench Griffin and Snyder agreed, maybe Snyder isn’t as dumb as we think. If Gruden did it on his own—extremely unlikely—when Snyder fires the first year coach, Gruden has sent a message to every owner, he has authority over who plays.
That will only help Gruden in his next Job as head coach.
As for RGII and those who absolve him for his awful leadership skills, poor on field decision-making, and ego-centric dealing with the media—toughen up. The world treating you like a hero or those who worship as one have been lying to you.
You are no better than the rest of us.
For the millions we pay you, the adulation we lay at your feet, and all the perks being you incurs…It can’t be all good…You are human, you will make mistakes, and there are consequences.
Toughen up, for goddsake. You are embarrassing yourself and you’re profession.
WEEK 13 PICKS
We hit two out of three Thanksgiving games, but only one Total call. And. Of course we lost the only true Lock we saw on this week’s schedule. Home field, 65% winning record on Thanksgiving, against a division rival for the division lead and Romo and the ‘Boys stink.
Even though it cost me, I loved it…
Yet again, we hit the O/U of the Week Special, so, at least we got a split.
UPSET SPEC IAL
MIAMI DOLPHINS @ NEW YORK JETS -6.5 42
We’re taking the Jets in this one because the team has always loved playing for Rex Ryan and we think that could make the last month of the season tough on Jets opponents.
This is one of those usually tight, low scoring division games…
Our play is the Jets and the Under.
Jets 20 Dolphins 16
GAMEOF THE WEEK
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS @ GREEN BAY PACKERS – 3 58.5
Game of the Year…Super Bowl Preview…This baby should live up to the hype…
Been picking ATS for four years now and I’ve created a notebook full of Dos and Don’t’s.
Never bet against the pats or Packers at home. Take double-digit underdogs against Pittsburgh.
There’s no rules for this one. I’m taking the Pack over the Pats …and the Over!
Packers 38 Patriots 34
