Player awards for Week 13 of the NFL season.
NFL Awards Week 13
The Dan Marino Award - Russell Wilson, SEA…22-30 310 yds, 3 TD, 0 Int. 8 att, 47 yds. My favorite QB in the league, and I fell in love watching him in Aug 2012 rookie pre-season games. Unbelievably accurate passer, tight spiral, strong arm…nifty, shifty, classic running style – little flash, but quick enough to pick up solid yardage and always smartly seeking the safest route, sacraficing a few extra yards but expertly avoiding heavy hits. His head and attitude set him apart as well – sharp, composed, confident, heavily goal-oriented, and a top notch work ethic. Hopefully a Super Bowl champion come early February.
The Ryan Leaf Award - Geno Smith, NYJ…4-9, 29 yds, 0 TD, 1 Int; 1 att, 2 yds. With a passer rating of 8.3 and getting benched after halftime for the unheralded Simms brother, the poor rookie was a cinch to win his 3rd straight Leaf Award. And also for the 2nd week in a row, the Jets managed only 1 FG in the game.
The Walter Payton Award - Adrian Peterson, MIN…35 att, 211 yds, 0 TD; 2 rec, 0 yds. AP is well on his way to joining the pantheon of Great NFL RBs, as he became the 3rd fastest running back to 10,000 yards, trailing just Jim Brown and Eric Dickerson, 2 games faster than Barry. This will almost assuredly be his 5th 1,300 yard season (he’s at 1,208), joining the following club: Barry, Walter (both 9), Emmitt (7), Brown & Tomlinson (6), Earl Campbell, Dickerson…and surprisingly, Clinton Portis and Curtis Martin too with 5. Portis is the only member of the club to have never rushed for 1,600 yds at least once – 1,591 in ’03 his best…his 2nd yr.
AP has rushed for 10 or more TDs every season including 2013 – 10 exactly so far this year. He turns 29 next offseason, so another 4,000+ yards, with good health, wouldn’t be surprising. That’d put him in 4th place all time, ahead of Curtis Martin (14,110 yds) and behind Barry’s 15,269. Of course, Emmitt (18,355) and Walter (16,726) are 1-2.
The Blair Thomas Award - Ray Rice, BAL…12 att, 32 yds, 0 TD; 6 rec, 38 yds. Rice and Geno Smith are racking up the Bust Awards this year, but as a two-time 1,300 yard rusher coming off 1,143 yards in 2012, Rice’s huge slide this year has been shocking. This was the 7th time he’s averaged under 3 yds/carry this year…his stats through 11 games: 482 yds, 2.9/carry, 4 TDs. He’s averaging just 5 yds/rec on 43 catches as well. Cannot make the first guy miss any more, and not breaking tackles.
The Jerry Rice Award - Tie between Josh Gordon, CLE…10 rec, 261 yds, 2 TDs…and…Alshon Jeffrey, CHI…12 rec, 249 yds, 2 TDs. Who would have ever thought these two would each have two 200 yard games this season? Gordon now has 498 yards the last two games and becomes the first player ever to record back-to-back 200 yard recieving days. His 261 yds ties him with Seahawk legend Steve Largent for the 14th best total ever, while Jeffrey’s 249 lies at 26th all-time. Gordon is at 124.9 yds/gm, which would be 2nd all-time to Wes Chandler’s 129.0 in 1982 if he can maintain his ridiculous pace. And he’s only 22 yrs old! Meanwhile Jeffrey is only 23…great to see explosive new talent in the league.
The Charles Rodgers Award - Darius Heyward-Bey, IND…1 rec, 23 yds, 0 TD; 1 rush, (-11) yds. One of many poor Raider picks in the last 7 or 8 drafts (7th overall in 2009 Draft), DHB is playing his first season w/ the Colts, and his production has been typically poor – only one game over 50 yds all season (just 59 yds in Week 3), and just one TD as well – even with Reggie Wayne out! He was targeted 5 times Sunday, but only managed just the one catch. He did come close to 1,000 yds in 2011 – 64 rec, 975 yds, 4 TDs – but for his career, has managed just 167 recs for under 2,400 yds and 12 TDs. He was known as a speedster with questionable hands and route-running skills coming out of Maryland, but in Al Davis’ later years, his drafting really went haywire.
