Finally big league call-up time for the Milwaukee Brewers’ Caleb Grindl.
Grindl Lost for Words
After six years with the Milwaukee Brewers, Caleb Grindl finally got the opportunity to take his Major League bow as the Brewers defeated the Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ball Park on Saturday and, after such a long time, he was ecstatic to have been given the chance.
Grindl, a favorite with fans who bet on baseball, has impressed in the Minor Leagues over the last six years but had yet to make an appearance on the big stage, was clearly overjoyed at his call up.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling, something I’ve been dreaming of for a long time now,” the 24 year old said. “It’s been crazy. I had the game on Saturday and my family was there for that. I got in bed that night at midnight and got to the field at 8:30 a.m. (for Sunday’s 12:10 p.m. game),” he added.
The former Pace High School man, who was a fifth round pick in the 2007 draft, had initially been lined up to play for the Nashville Sounds in the minor leagues but then he was asked by manager, Mike Guerrero, to head to Cincinnati to replace the injured Ryan Braun, and he couldn’t believe his luck.
“(It) Started out as a normal conversation, asked me how I was feeling, asked about family. Then he says, ‘Hey, by the way, you’re going to Cincinnati.’ It was unbelievable. I was at a loss for words,” the pinch hitter added.
Grindl was only called to the plate once in the game and, whilst he did strike out, the experience will certainly stand him in good stead for the future and, if he can continue to progress then he could make a real impact as the Brewers aim to climb off the bottom of the National League Central standings.
