Stan Van Gundy vs Dwight Howard – NBA BasketballSunday, April 8, 2012 22:53
Stan Van Gundy exposed Dwight Howard for the Lebron-like fraud that he is.
One Small Step for Coach Kind
Stan Van Gundy may be my new favorite coach. At least in the NBA.
After a season of Dwight Howard Lebroning the Orlando Magic and their fans, Van Gundy turned the tables and left Howard with egg on his face, literally speechless.
Some in professional team sports might say Van Gundy broke a cardinal rule in going public with what he had been told inside the front office about Howard wanting him fired. But this is not a case of, say, a locker room brawl between two teammates best left unspoken behind closed doors. No, this was yet another case of a superstar holding an organization hostage, his own coach the fall guy.
Van Gundy, of course, had nothing to lose. Chances are, he was already going to be fired at the end of the season at Howard’s insistence, so why not risk it now? These situations are most extreme in the NBA, where one player can make such a huge difference on the team’s results on the floor–and, hence, such a star player can wield extreme influence on the franchise as whole. In the NBA, the superstar always wins, unless the coach already has a handful of rings.
So if Van Gundy was on his way out regardless, why shouldn’t he layout the facts? Why shouldn’t he expose Howard for the spineless egomaniac he is? The superstar may still win, but his victory will be a Pyrrhic one. About time–these manipulations have occurred far too often.
