Analysis of the Wimbledon Men’s Semifinal matches.

Todd’s Tennis Takes: Wimbledon Semifinals Preview

So Berdych comes through in beating Federer, only needing four sets, and shows the tennis world that indeed Fed’s aura has even taken a hit on the lawn, where he will fail to be in the finals of Wimbledon for the first time since 2002… and for the 2nd Slam in a row will even miss the semis.

Berdych played well, very steady, with strong groundstrokes, but make no mistake, the Federer of ’04-’06 wins this match in 3 or 4 sets. Turning 29 this August, Fed is in the sights of Father Time… and the results tell the tale–heck, how can this result be so shocking if Falla was serving for the match against him in the 1st round… Alejandro Falla!!!!!

Berdych – Djokovic: Berdych plays Djokovic in one semi, after Djoker steamrolled ‘happy to be here’ Lu, losing only seven games in the entire match. I think the young but veteran Djokovic, who’s actually twenty months younger than Berd Dog (born 5/87 vs. Berd’s 9/85), will take down the tall (6’5″) Czech in 4 sets. For the 2nd Slam in a row, Berd has exceeded expectations, making the semis, but I think he will again be rebuffed by a player who’s been there before, in this case a seven-time Slam semifinalist, including Wimbledon in 2007. Djokovic will play better defense than Federer and commit fewer easy unforced errors. I think he’ll also do a better job abusing Berdych’s very average 2nd serve. He’s -120 in this match (so is Berd Dog)… I’ll take the resurgent Serbian to make his third career Grand Slam final.

Nadal – Murray: I love Nadal here. He thumped Murray at the All England Club two years ago on his way to his only Wimbledon title and owns a 7-3 record vs. Murray lifetime, though Murray’s won 3 of the last 5 encounters–including the Aussie this year when Nadal had to retire down two sets. Murray has made two Slam finals in his life (’08 US Open, ’10 Aussie), losing poorly in both matches to Federer. Nadal has 7 Slam trophys in his living room. Nadal is a beast who digs deep seemingly every point and chases down balls like few if any have ever done before. Murray’s 2nd serve will be jumped on by the Spaniard, and I expect 3 or 4 breaks from Rafa in the match. He’s only -170 to win, a decent risk in my book. You’re only paid +130 for risking it on the Scot.
